Summer is finally upon us, which means whether it be a family vacation or taking a solo trip – it’s time to pull out your suitcase to find the most useful things to pack for summer travel.

It’s easy to suddenly fall into the pits of anxiety, scrambling before a summer trip wondering, “what do I pack?” – but after years of solo traveling in addition to extensive summer travel with my family over the years, I’ve mastered the exact things you’ll want to bring with you for your next summer vacation.

This guide will serve as the ultimate summer packing checklist to make your upcoming summer holidays a breeze instead of a bust – allowing you more time to enjoy those fruity drinks by the beach instead of searching for last minute items near your hotel.

What Should Be at the Top of Your Packing List: Summer Travel Essentials (2026)

Of course, you can’t even embark on your exciting summer trip, whether it be to Capri in Italy or Cape Town in South Africa, without all of your travel documents.

It’s a little hard to be swimming in the Mediterranean without your passport, boarding pass, train ticket, or ID. Even though we’re living in an ever-changing world hurdling toward an all-digital-atmosphere, be sure to bring paper copies of important documents before you leave for your summer trip.

It’s also important to pack things that you might find challenging to find while abroad, like foreign currency or medication.

The interactive checklist below will help you make sure to bring all the important documents you’ll need for your upcoming summer adventure:

13 Useful Things to Pack for Summer Travel (2026)

After traveling my entire life, from cross-country road trips to solo trips around the world, I’m going to share my full-proof summer packing list – suitable for any kind of trip that’s bound to be full of sunshine, swimming, and lengthy travel days.

  1. Dry fit shirts

In recent years, I have discovered the magic of dry fit shirts for travel. Let me tell you, it completely changes the travel game – especially for those long, sweaty summer days where you’re constantly on the move from one point to another.

In recent years, I have discovered the magic of dry fit shirts for travel. Let me tell you, it completely changes the travel game – especially for those long, sweaty summer days where you’re constantly on the move from one point to another.

I can’t recommend getting a few dry fit shirts for your next summer trip. You’ll feel cleaner on travel days, hikes, and long walks under the blistering sun. Plus, it’ll make your suitcase lighter, too!

2. Reusable water bottle

Summer means needing to stay hydrated. When on the move and traveling in the summer, it can sometimes be hard to find a bottle of water when you think – even while in popular cities like Barcelona or Paris.

This is exactly where a reusable water bottle can come in handy. My favorite water bottle to take with me on my summer adventures these past 10 years has been this one, as it easily fits on the side of my backpack and keeps water nice and cold to keep you refreshed during your sunny travels.

3. Bug spray

This is one of those things we tend to always forget to pack before summer travel, even if it’s a true essential for those of us that tend to get attacked by mosquitoes in humid climates like in Washington D.C. or Cairns in Australia.

I love this little mini bug spray when I travel as it helps to keep those pesky mosquitoes away, without needing to check it into my luggage.

Price: $4 USD

4. Swimmer’s ear

Summer travel means lots of pool time, but for those of us with sensitive ears – sometimes those splashes can be more of a nightmare than fun and games with friends doing cocktails and cannonballs.

I always be sure to bring a little swimmer’s ear with me that easily fits into my toiletries bag, as I’ve already lived the nightmare of traveling with a clogged ear – from during a family trip to San Francisco and even during my first trip to Paris!

Price: $10 USD (Pack of 2)

5. Sunscreen

When I was on my way to Cape Town last year, I was in a Boots in the London airport and realized that it totally slipped my mind that it was summer in South Africa and that I needed sunscreen.

Since then, I am sure to always travel with a mini spray sunscreen like this. These are my favorites for summer travel as they’re small, last long, and are easy to fit in a side pocket in your suitcase or backpack for easy access.

6. Portable fan

Sometimes during summer trips, you’re just trapped somewhere with no air conditioning – like on a bus in Santorini or while wandering the streets of Lisbon.

This is where a little mini portable fan can make a world of difference. I love this one as it’s affordable, battery operated, and truly does cool me down while I’m wandering around toasty European cities in the summer.

Plus, it comes with the most adorable little case – making it perfect for other summer activities on the go like local day trips or summer music festivals.

Price: $14 USD

7. Earplugs

Earplugs, whether they be for protecting your ears in the pool or keep the noise levels down during your hostel stays – are one of my must-haves for summer travel.

These types of earplugs came in handy, especially during my younger solo-travel years, to help keep my ears chlorine free, but also let me sleep when I was traveling in noisier, busy hotels during peak summer travel.

8. Packing Cubes

We know that during summer trips, especially long ones around Europe or girls weekends with friends, we all want to bring lots of different outfits for those fun group photos and Instagram-worthy pictures.

This is where packing cubes come into the picture.

Instead of rolling your clothes and risking crinkling your cute sundresses or rompers, packing cubes can help you to save space and stay organized when embarking on long summer trips – whether they be solo or with family and friends.

I’ve used these packing cubes for nearly ten years now, and they have never failed me once – having been with me in Israel, Japan, South Africa, Australia, and all over Europe.

9. Power Bank

While summer travel means longer days and more time for exploring, it also means lengthier amounts of time outside where you might need to recharge your phone battery more often than usual.

To make sure you don’t miss any magical summer memories, I use this power bank to keep my phone charged when on the go and exploring new places in the summer. It’s lightweight, reliable, and has both USB 2.0 and USB-C ports.

10. Microfiber Towel

Summer travel means exploring local beaches and lots of showers to stay sticky-and-sweaty free. After lots of solo summer trips around the world and hopping between hostels, I learned it was best to keep my own travel towel handy.

This microfiber towel is my favorite as it’s lightweight, easy to shake sand off of, and easy to fit into small suitcases and carry-ons.

11. Foldable Daypack

One of the best parts of summer travel is the opportunity to take day trips with the long sunshine and “later curfews” if you will.

To have a better day trip, a reliable daypack is essential.

I’ve used this foldable backpack for the past few years and it’s never failed me. From its different zipper compartments and water proof exterior, and it has served me well.

It’s perfect for keeping your belongings safe while also having a reliable place to put any souvenirs you collect throughout the day.

12. Travel Laundry Bag

Let’s face it: summer travel means stinky clothes. I can’t tell you how many loads of laundry I did when I would do my solo trips circling around Europe for the summer.

Bringing a laundry bag like this one can you to make sure you keep your clean clothes fresh and separate from your dirty ones.

13. waterproof sneakers

If you’re taking a summer trip to somewhere on the more humid side, like Costa Rica or even out to do some hiking in California, then trust me – you’ll want to pack a pair of waterproof sneakers.

Bringing these sneakers with me on my trip to Israel saved my life. They were easy to clean after dirty hikes and took less time to dry out than traditional sneakers do.

☀️🧳 Summer Packing List FAQs 🧳☀️

☀️ What Should I Pack for a Summer Vacation?
I like to pack lightweight tops like dry-fit shirts, a few pairs of shorts and skirts, a dress or two, a couple of swimsuits, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Summer travel is all about keeping things lightweight and versatile.
👗 How Many Outfits Do I Need for a 1-Week Summer Vacation?
I think having 2 nicer outfits (dresses, rompers, etc.) and then easy mix-and-match pieces is best. Solid-colored tank tops, shorts, and skirts make it easy to create multiple outfits without overpacking.
🎒 Is a Carry-On Enough for a Summer Trip?
Yes, a carry-on is definitely enough for a summer trip. I've taken 3–4 week trips across Europe and Australia/New Zealand with just a carry-on and done just fine. Summer clothes are much lighter than clothing for other seasons, making it easier to pack more outfits without weighing yourself down.
👟 What Shoes Should I Pack for Summer Travel?
I know it's tempting, but I'd still stick primarily to sneakers since you'll likely be doing a lot of walking no matter where you're headed. You can pack one nicer pair of sandals or dressier shoes, but personally, I always bring them and rarely end up wearing them.
🧴 What Are the Most Forgotten Summer Travel Essentials?
Everyone remembers sunscreen, but people often forget lesser-known summer essentials like bug spray, swimmer's ear drops, zinc oxide (which is great for both sun protection and mosquito bites), and aloe vera for after-sun care.
