Finding the best lightweight carry-on suitcase can take a lot of trial and error, but luckily, as a seasoned solo traveler of upwards a decade – I’m here to share with you what I believe to be the best lightweight carry-on suitcases for international travel.

As someone who has been living in Paris for over 5 years now, I know how important a lightweight suitcase for Europe is. Between dragging it up cobblestone hills, stairs in the metro, or long treks from the airport outside of the city center and back – choosing a great piece of lightweight luggage can make your trip go from “drag” to “fab” in an instant.

Why Does Choosing Lightweight Luggage Matter?

Lightweight luggage matters because it can change how smoothly your entire trip goes and make the overall journey feel less tiresome or tedious.

From wheels that handle rough pavements, to easy luggage lifting into the overhead compartment above you on the flight, to carrying it through heavy stairs in an old European city – lightweight luggage can help reduce travel fatigue and allow you to focus your energy where it really matters: exploring a new place.

Plus, airline weight limits are continuously getting stricter – meaning that a lightweight carry on can also help you to save some money. Also, less suitcase weight means more room for your belongings – allowing you to pack more things in a smaller amount of space!

🧳 How I Choose the Best Lightweight Carry-On Luggage

⚖️ Weight

Because every pound matters, especially with stiff airlines that will charge you for barely going over the limit, when that travel budget can be allocated to drinks, souvenirs, and meals out in your exciting destination.

💪 Durability

Because I like things that are built to last. Much of the travel gear I own has been with me for the better part of the decade, and a lightweight suitcase for international travel is no exception. This means choosing between polycarbonate, ABS, and soft shell suitcases depending on what each trip entails.

🛞 Wheels

It isn’t just a lightweight suitcase for Europe that’ll go on an older continent, but a carry-on with impeccable wheels that can stand the test of time. Living in Paris, I have been able to test out these suitcases and just how much uneven cobblestone they can withstand. Anything that is a four spinner over two wheels usually wins in my book.

🧩 Organization

We all know how much I love my packing cubes for organization. Same goes for the actual suitcase itself. I love individual pockets, places to put different types of clothes or emergency travel items.

✈️ Airline Compatibility

Lots of airlines have different rules, so to make it less complicated, I’ve tried to choose the best lightweight carry-ons that abide by most major airlines.

💰 Value

Let’s face it, in today’s world, money is tight, meaning every dollar you spend should go towards an amazing piece of carry-on luggage for international flights that’ll stand the test of time. I’ve evaluated these lightweight suitcases based on which one gives you the most bang for your buck, because it’s not just about what’s cheapest, but the best long-term purchase for your travel needs.

7 Best Lightweight Carry-On Suitcases for International Travel (From a Frequent Global Traveler)

From trotting to globe between South Africa, Asia, and my home continent Europe – I’ve been able to personally test the first four of these suitcases myself across dozens of countries (with the majority of them being in my frequent travel rotation for several years – making them hand-picked favorites).

For the remaining recommendations, I relied on extensive research, first-hand luggage testing, and strong customer reviews and reputations among frequent travelers.

Here are what I believe to be the best lightweight carry-on suitcases for international travel:

  1. Level8 Luminous Textured Carry-On

📏 Dimensions: 21.5″ × 14.5″ × 9.2″

💵 Price: Around $170

🏆 Best For: Best all-around lightweight carry-on

I was beyond ecstatic when I first unpacked my Level8 suitcase.

Living in Paris, things often never get mailed to my apartment – meaning I had to go pick it up at La Poste. Of course, my first thought was, “how on earth am I going to lug this thing all the way home?” – as I live in an “old” part of Paris near the Eiffel Tower with lots of cobblestones and uneven pavement.

Luckily, this suitcase surprised me. It came with a suitcase cover (which is great to protect it from scuff marks, dents, etc.), and is easily the most lightweight suitcase I have ever used to date. Its wheels are quiet, there are lots of zippered mesh compartments for organization, and the color is absolutely adorable and matches all of my other travel gear perfectly.

I really look forward to taking it to my upcoming trip to Lake Como and Switzerland next month to enjoy this lightweight luggage while climbing up lots of hills and old streets in both countries!

2. Travelpro Maxlite 5

📏 Dimensions: 21.75″ × 15.75″ × 7.75″

💵 Price: Around $160

🏆 Best For: Quick little and light-packing sunny getaways

As another long-time favorite lightweight carry-on for international travel, this is my go-to lightweight suitcase for trips where I expect there to be sunny weather and don’t mind a soft-side shell – like Greece or Barcelona.

The carry-on is sturdy, the handle has a good feel to it, and it’s probably the lightest soft-side carry-on suitcase I’ve ever owned. It’s a classic that is great for short trips and quick hops from one place to the other.

3. Delsey Paris Spinner

📏 Dimensions: 21.7″ × 13.8″ × 9.1″ (55 × 35 × 23 cm)

💶 Price: Around $400

🏆 Best For: A great suitcase for longer international trips while keeping carry-on size

This lightweight carry-on has essentially been my ride-or-die suitcase for long-haul international trips.

The handle has a great grip on it, the wheels have been through every climate you could possibly imagine, and the outer-hard shell has been amazing at protecting the many souvenirs I’ve brought from around the world.

Plus, this is probably my favorite carry-on for organization. The front-pocket is a great place to store your laptop or other things that you want within easy reach of you while traveling without needing to take your whole suitcase apart on the busy airport floor.

4. Rockland

📏 Dimensions: 20″ × 13″ × 7.5″ (with wheels)

💵 Price: Around $45 on Amazon

🏆 Best For: Budget travelers who still want something that works well without breaking the bank

We’re always hearing about big name suitcase brands, but what many people don’t know is that budget options can actually work really well and stand the test of time – like this suitcase from Rockland.

I have used this Rockland on short weekend trips to Chicago, week long trips to the South of France, and actually still use it on my annual trip to the US when I fly from Paris to New York City.

It has great compartments, and is surprisingly not too heavy – making the perfect choice if you’re on a budget for the best lightweight suitcase.

5. Briggs & Riley Baseline

📏 Dimensions: Approximately 21″ × 14″ × 9″

💵 Price: Around $729

🏆 Best For: People who have the budget for more luxury, like having a lifetime warranty for repairs, and want extra peace of mind with rough baggage handling

If you’re willing to spend a little more on lightweight carry-on that’s on the luxurious side, opting for a Briggs & Riley Baseline could be a choice worthwhile.

Known for exceptional equality that’s resistant to weather stains and tears, a nifty expander, and no receipt needed for a repair if the airline damages your luggage – this carry on has a lot going for it.

6. Samsonite Proxis

📏 Dimensions: 22″ × 14″ × 9″

💵 Price: Around $500

🏆 Best For: Super lightweight travel with decked-out features

Totaling at a low 4.6 pounds, the Samsonite Proxis is infamous for being able to carry it with your pinky when empty – making it a strong contender for the best lightweight suitcase.

With all the decked out features like a built-in USB port and TSA approved locks, the Samsonite Proxis is a great choice to have the best of both worlds.

7. July Carry-On Light

📏 Dimensions: 21.25″ × 15″ × 8.5″

💵 Price: Around $255

🏆 Best For: Sleek design and quiet, safe wheels

Seeing it has one of the most modern and aesthetic designs for a carry-on suitcase I have ever seen in addition to several hallmark lightweight suitcase features, July’s Capsule Pro Carry-On definitely deserves a moment in the spotlight.

Designed top-down-style so that it doesn't open from the middle, this suitcase helps people to fit more inside of it without tacking on extra weight on the suitcase itself. Also, it’s built-in silent move pro-lockable wheels help prevent it from rolling away – which is often a problem with lightweight suitcases!

My Final Verdict: Which is the Best Lightweight Carry-on

In the end, if you’re looking for a lightweight suitcase that is truly synonymous with the term “light as a feather” – you’ll want to go with a Level8 suitcase.

I’ve never used a suitcase that’s as lightweight as this one before, and it really does make a difference when you’re running through train stations or airports with your hands full – especially in cities in Europe.

🧳✈️ Best Lightweight Carry-On Luggage FAQs ✈️🧳

🧳 What is the best lightweight carry-on luggage for international travel?
If you’re looking for a piece of lightweight luggage for international travel, there’s no doubt – LEVEL8 is the best lightweight luggage I have ever used. It’s insanely easy to carry through airports, train rides, and lug around on a long-haul journey.
⚖️ How much should a lightweight carry-on suitcase weigh?
A lightweight carry-on suitcase is usually only around 4 to 7 pounds with nothing else inside of it. If you lift up the suitcase and think, “wow, this is as light as a feather” – it probably constitutes as a piece of lightweight carry-on luggage.
📏 What size carry-on is allowed on international flights?
While the standard international carry-on size is usually 21 × 14 × 9 inches (55 × 35 × 23 cm) – it’s important to know that all airlines have different ranges. For instance, I have gotten away with much bigger carry-ons for domestic flights in the US than in Europe. Therefore, it’s important to always check with the specific airline you’ll be flying with.
🛡️ Is hard-shell or soft-sided luggage better for international travel?
Choosing a soft or hard-shell-sided luggage depends on your trip. When it’s to a sunny place, I usually opt for soft-side luggage – but if it’s a bigger trip with varied, rainy weather and I have a long list of fragile souvenirs to bring back, I like to opt for a hard-side piece of luggage to better protect my belongings.
📦 Is expandable carry-on luggage worth it?
Yes, expandable carry-on luggage is beyond worth it. As someone who has made dozens of trips between the US and France with a carry-on, I cannot tell you how many times my expandable Rockland has saved me from needing to buy a new piece of luggage at the last minute!
✨ Is LEVEL8 luggage worth it?
Yes, LEVEL8 suitcases are genuinely worth it. Between the competitive price, lightweight characteristic, sleek and clean design, and mesh compartments – this is a classic carry-on that deserves a spot in your luggage repertoire.
