Is Cologne Worth Visiting?
Out of all the underrated cities in Germany, I often hear of people traveling to Cologne – most likely for it’s commanding cathedral right out of the train station, but is a trip to Cologne really worth it just to visit Cologne Cathedral?

Living in Paris, I took a weekend trip to Cologne in the fall during shoulder season – to give you an unbiased, less-touristic point of view to see if Cologne is really worth visiting.
Is It Worth Visiting Cologne?
Personally, I don’t think that Cologne is worth going out of your way to see – as the main appeal of Cologne is its cathedral, and while it is stunning in person to see, there are other European cities with similar cathedrals such as Strasbourg and Munich that have a cuter personality with more to offer tourists to see and do.
Regardless, I’m going to break down what I did and saw in Cologne – so that you can know exactly how to make the most of your time on a short trip to Cologne in the event you decide to visit whilst on a bigger trip across Europe.

What Is There to See in Cologne?
Cologne is a pretty small city, and besides it’s cathedral – it honestly doesn’t offer much for tourists besides wandering around the streets or sitting down at a restaurant.
Here’s a breakdown of everything I did and saw in Cologne:
Heumarkt
While this open-aired cobblestone plaza is known for its annual Christmas market, when I went in October on a Saturday – this area was mostly just locals hanging out.

Historic Old Town (Alter Markt)
Nearby the “Fischmarkt” and home to the Old Markt – this was one of the cutest parts of Cologne. It’s colorful buildings and captivating, typical European city charm made for the perfect place to take pictures, sit for a bite to eat, or even just sit and marvel in its adorable aura.

Hahnentor & Eigelstein-Tourburg
Once one of the twelve gates that lead the way to the entrance of the city of Cologne – Hahnentor marks an important piece of history in Cologne from the 13th century.

Honestly, there isn’t anything else here besides the gate – but the major street nearby has a lot of fun restaurants to explore!
Rheingarten
Another extremely charming part of Cologne, Rheingarten is a grden nestled by the water – with the same quaint, colorful outdoor restaurants to be found in the Old Town.
If you’re looking for a place to relax in Cologne, Rheingarten is an excellent choice – as it’s less congested than the Old Town.

Is It Worth Seeing the Cologne Cathedral?
I have to say, that yes – the Cologne cathedral is no joke, and very well may be the most eye-catching and commanding cathedral I have ever seen across Europe. However, that being said, I still am not convinced that it’s worth traveling all the way to Cologne just to see the cathedral –even if it is wildly impressive.

Is Cologne Really Worth Visiting?
Overall, the main takeaway is this – if you’re on a bigger trip across Europe, given Cologne’s convenient location between cities like Brussels, Amsterdam, and Paris, then Cologne could make for a nice one night stop in between train travel across Europe. However, if you’re interested in a more cultural experience, cuter city, and more things to see and do in Germany – I would highly recommend visiting Munich or even Dresden over Cologne.
