15 Best Things to Do in New York City in the Fall

New York City is known for being like a movie-scene during the fall: between the crispy air, cozy coffee shops, and colorful streets alive with energy – it can be a challenge to narrow down the best things to do in the fall in New York City.

As someone who has lived in New York City during the fall, I have to say – it’s one of the best times of year. New York City becomes a magical place during the colder months, especially during Christmas – but fall is no exception.

Between the parks, coffee shops, and vintage shopping to do – New York City can scream fall if you know the right places to go.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in New York City in the fall, look no further – as someone who is obsessed with fall and loves the city, I’ll let you know exactly what to eat, see, and do during the autumn in the Big Apple.

🍂🗽 WHY VISIT NYC IN THE FALL? 🍁☕

☀️ Crisp, Sunny Days Perfect for Walking

Fall brings crisp, sunny days that are much more comfortable for walking around New York City. I personally hate NYC in the summer – it’s too humid, muggy, and crowded. I always need a minimum of three showers a day when I go to NYC in the summer!

☕ Cozy Coffee Shops & City Strolls

New York City has lots of coffee shops that are great for stopping in during a city stroll. Fall is the perfect time to grab a seasonal drink, explore different neighborhoods, and enjoy the city on foot.

🍁 Beautiful Fall Colors in Central Park

Central Park is especially beautiful in the fall, when the trees turn shades of yellow, orange, and red. It's the perfect time to enjoy a long walk, take photos, and experience a completely different side of New York City.

15 Best Things to do in New York City in the Fall

  1. Eat Pumpkin Treats at Tompkin’s Square Bagels

On Tik Tok, I am always seeing tourists go to bagel shops that aren’t where the best stuff is at – always seeming to miss the mark where Tompkins's Square Bagels always hits the spot, especially in the fall.

Watch me enjoy Tompkin’s Square bagels in the cooler months in NYC in my vlog below!

Offering abundant options, vegan choices, and fall specialties – Tompkin’s is one of my favorite places to visit in NYC when the weather cools down.

Pro Tip: Be sure to get into the season with the pumpkin bagel and pumpkin spiced cream cheese – they’re both to die for!

2. Explore Central Park During the Changing Colors

This one is pretty obvious, but you haven’t experienced a complete fall in New York City until you’ve taken a stroll through Central Park in the midst of the changing colors.

Wherever you walk in the park, whether it be all the way up toward the MET or closer to the Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue – you’ll want to have one camera in hand and a coffee in the other to take in the season and capture picture-perfect fall memories.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to walk by Bethesda Terrace, where there are a lot of movies and T.V. shows that have been filmed – as this area of Central Park is particularly pretty during the fall.

3. Get Spooky at the Village Halloween Parade

Just as iconic as it is in Tik Tok videos, you won't want to miss the Halloween Parade if you happen to be in New York City on October 31st.

Taking place this year on Saturday, October 31st between 7p.m and 11p.m. in Greenwich Village, this parade often works its way uptown to around 15th street.

It’s free to watch, and a very “cinematic” moment in the middle of Manhattan that really makes you feel like you’re in your own spooky movie.

Pro Tip: If you want to skip the line and have better views of the parade, you can purchase tickets on the official website page. However, I personally just recommend trying to secure a spot on the street earlier and to avoid the massively packed areas – like Bleecker Street or 14th Street (quieter areas are usually Spring Street or Houston Street which border closer to SoHo than the village itself).

4. Take a Seasonal Walk on the Highline

The High-Line is one of those places in NYC that people either love or hate. For me, it’s not my favorite place in the city (I think taking a promenade along the Hudson is far pretty and has better city views).

However, there is one massive pro to walking the High Line in the fall – and that’s the native autumn plants that cover the walkway itself.

It’s a great place to escape the crowds of Midtown and to enjoy an elevated view of the city while also seeing new seasonal plants and art installations surround you for the cozier months ahead.

Pro Tip: A perfect fall day in New York City is to pair a High-Line walk with a Blue Bottle coffee in hand, and then exploring the Chelsea Market i

5. Be Amused at the Tompkin’s Square Park Halloween Dog Parade

This is probably my all-time favorite thing to do in New York City in the fall, just because of its sheer randomness and entertainment that makes it so quintessentially NYC.

I remember being in the city years ago with my cousin, who was living in the West Village at the time, and walking through the East Village for an ice cream to stumble upon a Halloween dog costume parade.

Yes, you read that right – and it is in fact as adorable in person as it sounds. Locals congregate in the classic East Village park to showcase their quirky costumes for their dogs.

With its 36th annual dog costume parade happening on Saturday, October 17th 2026 between 1 and 4p.m. – this is one of those things free things you’ll want to do in NYC this fall for pure, unserious entertainment.

Pro Tip: The event is totally free if you just want to watch, but if you want your own dog to strut their stuff this fall in NYC – you’ll have to be sure to register your pup to join the parade in advance.

6. Shop the Newest Fall Fashion at Macy’s in Herald Square

I’ll let you in on a little New York secret: the famous Macy’s in Herald Square isn’t just a tourist attraction – locals love to shop here as well.

Growing up, every time I visited the city with my native New Yorker mom – we would go into Macy’s and see what was on sale. I even purchased a new knife and cutting board from the cookware section on the top floor during the peak of the pandemic while I was living in the city.

A lot of the hottest new fall fashion will often show up at Macy’s first: like jackets, boots, and other styles that help you slip into the season.

Pro Tip: Scope out the new pieces that you like, and then come back right after Christmas – there are often major clearance sales. I bought a beautiful coat here in December for a fraction of the price that I still use to this day!

7. Enjoy a Coffee in the West Village

Unless you’re a stranger to social media, you’ve probably seen lots of videos online with people walking New York City in the fall with a coffee in hand.

Maybe it’s the Parisian in me, but while I do enjoy walking New York City with a coffee in hand – I also equally love to sit and watch the world go by from a coffee shop.

Watch me enjoy a coffee shop in the fall in NYC in my vlog below!

There’s something about having a still moment in the city while you calmly read your book or write in your journal while everything around you in Manhattan continues to practice utter chaos.

This is especially true in the fall, as the surrounding scenery and crispier air makes these kinds of activities even more pleasant.

Pro Tip: Blue Bottle is my all time favorite coffee in the, but for pure coffee shop vibes – I really enjoy 11th Street Café in the West Village or MUD SPOT in the East Village.

8. Discover the Hidden Food Hall in Grand Central Station

One year on my annual Thanksgiving trip to the city, my mom and I discovered that there's a massive food hall on the bottom floor of Grand Central Station.

Not only is this massive train station terminal iconic for all of the movies and T.V. shows that have been filmed here, but it’s great for a quieter food market – especially during the holiday season as places like Bryant Park and even Union Square get swamped.

Pro Tip: Be sure to look for the stand with the turkey cupcakes if you visit NYC around Thanksgiving – I would’ve absolutely had one if they were vegan!

9. Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

While it’s true that it’s much simpler to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from the comfort of your own home, when you’re already in the city – I think it’s worth the effort to try and see some of it with your own eyes.

Pro Tip: Try to stand on the outskirts of Herald Square around 37th and 38th streets to avoid being in the middle of a jam-packed crowd without sacrificing views of the parade itself.

10. Marvel in the Seasonal Produce at Union Square Market

When I lived in the city, my favorite place to buy local produce was at Union Square Market – as the vendors there always strive to have all the best in-season produce possible.

Pro Tip: Be on the lookout for Body & Soul Bakeshop, as they often set up camp there in the cooler months and have tons of gluten-free and vegan muffins, cakes, and pastries perfect for kicking off the fall for those with a sweet tooth.

11. New York Comic Con

Fall is often the best time of year for dreamers, adventurers, and lovers of escapism like myself – and one of the best places to do that in the city is Comic Con.

Held every year at the Javitis Center, this is a great place to deep dive into the universe of various movies, TV shows, games, or anime.

Pro Tip: Comic Con usually takes place in October, meaning it’s great to pair a trip to the city for this event alongside a New England road trip and align it with peak foliage timing.

12. Dive Deep into the Chelsea Market

Although it may sound a bit cliché, I do think that the Chelsea Market is still one of the most fun places to explore in New York City in the fall.

From the seasonal baked goods, food stands, and nearby local art exhibitions – this is a great place in the city to get into the spirit of the autumnal season.

Pro Tip: In addition to fall treats like the seasonal stuff offered at Doughnuttery, there are often lots of autumn-themed pop-ups that happen around Chelsea Market – like live music on Wednesday afternoons, Halloween face painting, and immersive art exhibitions.

13. Photograph the Fall Foliage on a Hudson River Cruise

Truth be told, the best colors in New York are found outside of the city – but you can easily solve that problem with a little day trip on a Hudson River Cruise to Cold Spring (which is only about an hour away from Manhattan).

Pro Tip: There are all sorts of routes that you can, but I think the best one is the 1 hour cruise that goes to Cold Spring – which has a national park that explodes with vibrant orange, red, and golden colors in the fall. This is perfect for a quick city escape and to get a taste of the season before heading back down to the city.

14. Celebrate Halloween with the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze

For Halloween lovers visiting the city, the annual parade isn’t the only place to get-your-ghoul on – as New York hosts an annual pumpkin carving event every year.

About an hour outside of the city, you can venture to discover all the delicately decorated pumpkins – making this one of the more family friendly fall activities in New York.

Pro Tip: This is perfectly paired with a Hudson River cruise – as you can get off very close to Hudson Valley in Westchester County to see the pumpkin carvings, which are happening between September 18th and November 8th this year.

15. See Gramercy Park in technicolor

Walking through Gramercy Park in October or November is one of those best-kept New York secrets that only a local would know to tell you about. In fact, I’ve never once seen this online – but this is probably the most beautiful thing you can do in the NYC if you plan on visiting during the fall.

Every year when I visit the city in late November, taking a colorful, contemplative colorful walk through Gramercy Park is an absolute must.

Honestly, I think Gramercy Park is the nicer “postcard autumn” place in New York City than Central Park. It’s quieter, and far more “in your face” in terms of auburn, brown, and yellow leaves around you than massive and more touristic places like Gapstow Bridge.

Pro Tip: Come early in the morning with a coffee in hand (my personal favorite is the Blue Bottle on Park Avenue), as it captures that early morning stillness of the city – and makes a great chance for gorgeous, personless photos of this quiet NYC neighborhood’s fall foliage.

🍂🗽 NYC IN THE FALL FAQs 🍁🏙️

🍂 Is fall a good time to visit New York City?
Honestly, fall is one of the best times of year to visit New York City. As someone who grew up visiting the city for years with my Brooklyn-born mother and even living in the city myself – fall is the perfect medium for cool, crisp days, beauty in Central Park, seasonal treats in cafes, pleasant walking weather, and far fewer tourists. Summer in the city is like a swamp, and Christmas can be overcrowded – but the fall gives you the best of both worlds with sunny days and fewer tourists.
🍁 What are the best things to do in NYC in the fall?
The best things to do in the fall in New York City are to explore the local markets and cafes for fall treats, explore the beauty in parks like Central Park or Gramercy Square Park, and Halloween festivities like the annual dog costume parade in Tompkins Square Park or the Village Costume Parade (often seen on social media).
📅 What is the best month to visit NYC for fall foliage?
The best month to visit NYC for fall foliage is late October to November. I visit every year in late November, and honestly – I am always surprised to see that lots of the colors on the trees are still there!
🌡️ What is the weather like in NYC during the fall?
NYC during the fall is perfect. September is pleasant, with sometimes shorts or short sleeves still needed, October is great for skirts, boots, and layering, and November is better suited for jeans and longer sleeves as the bitter cold starts kicking in. Luckily, all months in NYC during the fall are still very sunny!
🎃 What are the best fall activities in NYC besides Central Park?
The best activities in NYC during the fall besides Central Park are to enjoy a Hudson River cruise for fall foliage, explore the much quieter and more local Gramercy Park, and to take part in quirky NYC Halloween traditions like the adorable dog parade in Tompkins Square Park or the Village Parade.
🧥 What should I wear in New York City in the fall?
In the fall in New York City – lots of layers are best! On my annual trip to NYC in the fall, I usually layer my outfits wearing a short sleeve underneath a sweater with a warm jacket, sneakers or comfortable boots for walking, and sunglasses – as the sun is still surprisingly strong in the city in the fall!
